On team DaLORE’s trip to Odisha, we came across these beautiful Applique work, locally known as Pipili Applique which is a vibrant and distinctive craft from the town of Pipili in Odisha, India. This art form involves stitching colourful pieces of fabric onto a base cloth to create bold, decorative motifs such as flowers, animals, and mythological symbols. Originally crafted for religious and ceremonial use, especially for the grand Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath in Puri, Pipili applique can be seen adorning temple canopies, umbrellas, and chariots. Over time, this traditional craft has evolved into a popular decorative art, used in everything from wall hangings and lampshades to bags and home decor. Known for its rich colour combinations and playful patterns, Pipili applique reflects both the artistic heritage and the festive spirit of Odisha.
